Time and again I was struck by how seriously this game's writers took their characters, themes, and subject matter. Abstract or no, "Red Dead 2's" America is still a nation reeling from the Civil War, where women are not allowed to vote, and where Native Americans and their culture are being systematically eradicated.
Everything in the main narrative is treated with appropriate weight and humanity, and never did I encounter a lapse into the sort of haphazard satire and "everyone sucks" cop-outs embraced—by some of the same writers! This whole Western approach unsurprisingly comes with a ham-fisted grasp of politics. A woman eventually puts on a pair of pants, one character explains white privilege and why the people in the "southern" end of the map look at him funny, another says that Native Americans were—in what is at least acknowledged as being grossly reductive—"treated poorly," and everyone generally contemplates the horrors of racism and the aftermath of slavery.
And for hours upon hours, none of this injustice is explored in any real detail. I don't believe Charles' tribe is ever identified, though he works with Arthur to help the Wapiti, a fictional tribe that Rockstar PR told me is "not modelled on a specific tribe," but is a "mix of Native American peoples who have been pushed together by the changes being forced across the entire region.
Across what's now four games and two console generations, the company's characters have lumbered along in what's meant to convey the weight of a real person in contrast to the light, effortless controls of so many other games. But the result is artificial rather than convincing. Studios like Naughty Dog have proven capable of giving characters a consequential sense of weight without making it a challenge to navigate around a table or requiring you to hold down buttons to move at acceptable speeds.
Coupled with middling gunplay feedback and a few too many stealth segments, the chunky act of playing "Red Dead Redemption 2" doesn't feel good so much as it feels, eventually at least, tolerable. Navigating Arthur through the world is less like controlling a video game character and more like giving directions to an actor. Get in cover, I'll tell him, only to see him climb on top of the cover. Did I press the button too late?
Did my button-press register at all? Dude, get down, I'll cry, as his enemies begin to open fire. He'll slowly wheel around, then slide down to the ground with an elaborate stumbling animation. He'll haul his body weight forward, then finally crouch behind the wall. In many ways, you're nudged toward playing a "good" Arthur. The gang members he's closest to from the beginning are the more righteous, principled ones who are motivated by loyalty and a desire to help others, while he insults, argues with, and generally reacts negatively to those who are hot-headed and vicious.
On a narrative mission, for instance, a desperate and wounded man might plead with you to let him go. Should you do so, the mission will end with a virtual slap on the wrist and a restart from a nearby checkpoint. That's not quite the wrenching moral choice it could have been.
Playing through as a vicious monster is also possible, although it's not entirely clear to me whether there'd be some dissonance between that approach and Arthur's actual story. I still need to investigate further, but I'm really happy with how my playthrough turned out and the outlaw-with-a-soft-side Arthur I chose to inhabit. He's not a terrible character. In fact, there's a certain charm to his exasperation with everything, and it's interesting how he's resigned about who he is as someone who's not made for any other line of work.
But he's weaker for being in the vicinity of a player-character blank slate, whose outfits, facial hair, and haircut may be changed. In some ways he is one of the least interesting members of the gang; grizzled, loyal to a fault and a man resigned to his fading place in history as the era of lawlessness in the West begins to die. He allows himself to be swept along in Dutch's capers all too unquestioningly, an outlook he seems to have in life.
It's fascinating how defiantly "Red Dead Redemption 2" laughs in the face of other open-world games like "Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The "everything plus ten kitchen sinks" approach to design and world-building muddles some of the game's messages. It's hard to even gauge if "Red Dead Redemption 2" achieves its own goals, because by the end, it appears to be a bit of everything: For many, Arthur's tale will be poignant and memorable, a story punctuated by exceptional vistas and some of the finest digital realism modern hardware can muster.
For others, though, Arthur's arc will, inadvertently or not, be an all too familiar look at a "bad man" who isn't necessarily in control. From the moment we contacted Jansen Hearing and Air we felt like customer service is still a priority to some companies. Jeff was so helpful in explaining the problem and course of action, the service was great thank you Chad and they stuck to the price that was quoted! Thanks again Jansen Heating and Air. Jack did a thorough job of explaining products and options, Sally made the purchase and finance options a breeze, and the installation crew Chad, Doug, and Craig were simply outstanding!
So pleased we decided to go with Jansen. Installed a new furnace, April Air system, and AC unit with new duct work into a year old house. The whole crew from Jeff, to the office manager, and for sure the install team was a Class Act!. Quote was perfect and the install was perfect right down to the clean up, and the attention to shoe covers and plastic over the carpet the whole time.
They even took the time to call a week after install to make sure the Wifi thermostat was working properly! I can't recommend this company enough!! On the expensive side but hopefully I'll get what I paid for with the added premium. A trustworthy company who responed immediately during a very busy bitter cold period! I called Jansen Heating and Air and they where very quick to respond and make the long drive out from Freeport. When they where out their they noticed that the circuit breaker for the air conditioner was turned off and it turned out to be the same circuit that was feeding the heater.
When he turned the circuit breaker back on the heater started up again the house started warming up.
